Critical Stress and Wellness Center has deep roots in law enforcement and first responder communities. Our founder is a former officer and Air Force veteran; several of our clinicians have first responder backgrounds. That means when agencies across Northern Kentucky and the greater Cincinnati area need specialized psychological assessments, they’re working with people who genuinely understand the job.

Specialized assessments for law enforcement and first responders in Northern Kentucky

Fit for Duty Evaluation

A police officer stands in the middle of a street with their back to the camera, observing a crowd and police officers nearby, with people walking and cycling, and British flags hanging across the street.

A fit-for-duty evaluation determines whether an officer can safely and effectively perform the essential functions of their role. Our evaluations are thorough, objective, and legally defensible — combining clinical interviews, standardized psychological testing, behavioral observation, and records review to assess cognitive functioning, emotional stability, impulse control, and risk. The goal is not discipline; it’s safety — for the officer, their colleagues, and the public. Outcomes include a clear disposition and, where appropriate, recommendations for treatment or duty modification.

Critical Incident Stress Debriefing

After a traumatic event — an officer-involved shooting, a mass casualty response, a line-of-duty death — teams need structured support to process what happened. Our trained facilitators lead confidential, structured debriefing sessions that help individuals and teams normalize their reactions, reduce isolation, and connect with ongoing support when needed. We serve law enforcement agencies, fire departments, EMS, and other first responder organizations throughout Northern Kentucky.

Pre-Employment Psychological Testing

Hiring decisions in law enforcement carry real consequences. Our pre-employment psychological evaluations help agencies identify candidates who have the emotional stability, judgment, and stress tolerance the job demands — and flag potential concerns before costly hiring mistakes occur. We use validated instruments and structured clinical interviews to provide objective, job-relevant assessments that meet professional and legal standards.

Suitability Screening (KLEC)

We provide Kentucky Law Enforcement Council (KLEC)-compliant suitability screenings for law enforcement candidates across the state. These screenings evaluate psychological fitness, behavioral history, and readiness for the unique demands of policing. Our clinicians are familiar with KLEC requirements and produce reports that agencies can rely on. Contact us to discuss your agency’s screening needs.
